The parameters associated with sizing the defrost gas line are related to allowable pressure drop and refrigerant flow rate during defrost. Engineers use an estimated two times the evaporator load for effective refrigerant flow rate to determine line sizing requirements.

Another thermostatic expansion valve supplies liquid directly to the bypass line for desuperheating. A baffle installed in the surge tank helps prevent foam and liquid from entering the suction line.
